Cathay Pacific and Google Achieve 40% Reduction in Contrail Warming Using AI

In a significant stride towards sustainable aviation, Cathay Pacific and Google unveiled an extended collaboration on September 7–8, 2026. This partnership aims to implement AI-driven contrail avoidance technology across Cathay Pacific’s Asia-Pacific and ultra-long-haul routes. This initiative positions Cathay Pacific as the first commercial airline worldwide to test contrail avoidance on ultra-long-haul flights, defined as routes that exceed 16 hours and cover more than 13,000 kilometers.

An initial operational trial, initiated in late 2025, focused on over 100 flights across Cathay’s network. Over 80 of these flights adhered to AI-optimized contrail-avoidance routes. Google’s satellite imagery analysis estimated an impressive 40% reduction in the warming impact of contrails on these flights. The Hong Kong–Singapore corridor was a key route tested, with interventions there contributing to more than half of the trial’s total climate-impact reduction.

Google’s system integrates predictive AI models with satellite observations and sophisticated weather intelligence. This combination identifies atmospheric regions where persistent contrails are likely to form, enabling flight dispatchers and pilots to make slight altitude adjustments. Contrails are estimated to contribute to approximately one-third of aviation’s total climate impact. A larger second phase will now expand the trials across Cathay’s Asian and transpacific network. This expansion could revolutionize how airlines manage in-flight climate responsibility without necessitating new aircraft or fuels.
