Anthropic Unveils ‘Model Hardware Standard’ to Embed AI in Machines
In a significant development marking the transition of artificial intelligence from software to tangible entities, Anthropic introduced its Model Hardware Standard (MHS) on Thursday. This innovative universal framework is designed to enable AI agents to directly control physical lab and manufacturing equipment.
The MHS empowers AI agents to manage instruments such as microscopes, robotic arms, and automated liquid handlers. This allows them to execute complex tasks, ranging from routine drug discovery experiments to laser calibration on quantum computers, with minimal human intervention. Anthropic likens the standard to a USB-C cord, a universal connector that standardizes AI communication with physical devices.
One of the standout features of MHS is its speed. The integration of AI into equipment using MHS can be achieved in just hours or minutes, a stark contrast to the weeks or months required for custom engineering builds. Moreover, the standard is model-agnostic, freeing businesses from being tied to Anthropic’s Claude AI models.
Early adopters of this technology include Genentech, Carnegie Mellon University, Amazon Web Services, Doosan Robotics, Universal Robots, and Hugging Face. Anthropic’s future plans involve open-sourcing the standard, making it accessible to any device manufacturer worldwide.
This announcement positions Anthropic in direct competition with rivals OpenAI and Amazon, both of which have made substantial investments in AI-native devices and manufacturing tools. Anthropic is also developing an internal silicon team for custom chips and recently brought on board hardware executive Caitlin Kalinowski, formerly of OpenAI, Meta, and Apple.
