FAA & Electra Accomplish Groundbreaking Hybrid-Electric Flights Across Three States
The future of regional air travel received a significant advancement this week. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) revealed that Electra, in collaboration with the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) and the New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT), has successfully accomplished a milestone series of hybrid-electric demonstration flights. These flights connected small local airports to major airline hubs.
The flights were conducted during the week of August 18, 2026. They were part of the FAA’s eVTOL Integration Pilot Program (eIPP), one of the nation’s largest real-world testing environments for next-generation aircraft. Electra’s nine-passenger hybrid-electric aircraft, the EL2 (Goldfinch), flew a route between Manassas, Virginia, and Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The route included stops at Washington Manassas Airport, Millville Executive Airport in New Jersey, Atlantic City Bader Field, and Northeast Philadelphia Airport.
“This demonstration is a powerful proof point that the next era of aviation is here,” said Marc Allen, CEO of Electra. The eIPP, outlined in President Trump’s Unleashing Drone Dominance Executive Order, selected eight projects across 26 states in March 2026. The FAA will use the data from these flights to identify gaps, refine procedures, and support the safe integration of Advanced Air Mobility (AAM) into the National Airspace System. Further test flights are planned by PennDOT and other eIPP participants before the end of 2026.
