Apple and Alibaba Collaborate to Develop AI Model for China: A Historic First
In an unprecedented move in the global artificial intelligence (AI) landscape, Apple has discreetly trained a proprietary large language model (LLM) tailored for the Chinese market. This makes Apple the first foreign company to receive Beijing’s approval to deploy its own generative AI model in China.
As reported by Reuters, the model was developed with technical support from Alibaba, the Chinese tech giant. Alibaba’s Qwen models will also be integrated into Apple Intelligence across iOS, iPadOS, macOS, and visionOS for Chinese users.
This development marks a significant departure from Apple’s previous strategy of relying solely on third-party domestic models to deliver AI features on devices sold in the country. The new China-specific LLM provides Apple with much more control over the AI experience on iPhones, iPads, Macs, and Vision Pro devices in what is arguably its most competitive overseas market. Here, Apple has been facing increasing pressure from AI-powered competitors like Huawei.
Apple Intelligence, the company’s suite of AI tools, is expected to officially launch in China in the coming months following an iOS update. The rollout could potentially be timed to coincide with new iPhone launches in September.
This development follows a regulatory milestone last month when China’s Cyberspace Administration formally registered Apple’s generative AI service. This cleared the path for Apple Intelligence to reach Chinese consumers. Beijing has never before granted this level of approval to a foreign AI provider, marking a significant geopolitical and commercial breakthrough for Apple.
