FAA Approves Swift 100R Unleaded Avgas for Over 1,200 Engine Models
In a significant move towards eradicating lead from aviation fuel, Swift Fuels has revealed that the FAA has broadened the Approved Model List (AML) for its 100R unleaded aviation gasoline. The update includes the addition of more than 1,200 piston engine models and 1,600 airframe models to the fuel’s Supplemental Type Certificate (STC), initially approved in September 2024.
The newly endorsed aircraft represent approximately 56% of the current U.S. 100LL avgas consumption. This marks the first phase of Swift’s comprehensive transition plan. The engine approvals encompass over 80 piston engine OEMs, such as:
- Lycoming (~395 models)
- Continental (~195 models)
- Curtis Wright (95 models)
- Pratt & Whitney (95 models)
All certifications were managed by the FAA’s Central Certification Branch and adhere to the ASTM International fuel specification D8603.
According to Swift Fuels, 100R is the only commercially available 100-octane unleaded avgas that is FAA STC-approved and meets the ASTM D8603 production specification. Owners who have previously purchased Swift’s UL94 STC will automatically receive a 100R STC through Swift’s “Forever STC” program at no extra charge. The second and third phases, aiming at higher-performance engine combinations, are anticipated by 2028. The ultimate objective is a complete industry transition away from leaded 100LL by 2030.
