Purdue Research: GA Pilots Appreciate ADS-B Safety Enhancements Yet Worry About Privacy
A groundbreaking new survey from Purdue University’s School of Aviation and Transportation Technology has shed fresh light on the perceptions of America’s general aviation pilots towards Electronic Conspicuity (EC) technology, including the widely used ADS-B (Automatic Dependent Surveillance–Broadcast) system.
The nationwide study, titled “Electronic Conspicuity Technology for Aircraft Operating in the National Airspace System,” gathered insights from over 450 pilots. The results revealed broad support for the technology’s potential to improve situational awareness and enhance safety in the skies.
However, the study also highlighted significant concerns within the pilot community. These concerns primarily revolve around data privacy, regulatory enforcement, and the emerging trend of airports utilizing ADS-B flight data to levy or compute landing fees.
This pivotal research, spearheaded by Dr. Damon Lercel, an assistant professor at Purdue’s aviation school, comes at a crucial time. The FAA has recently proposed a comprehensive new rule for drone BVLOS (Beyond Visual Line of Sight) operations. This rule could potentially grant drones precedence over piloted aircraft that are not broadcasting an EC signal.
The research team plans to extend the study over the next year, investigating how pilot demographics and operational experience influence technology acceptance. This will help to better inform future FAA policymaking.
