The Resurgence of the Montana Bluebird: A Historic Appearance at EAA AirVenture Oshkosh 2026
Among the myriad of captivating stories from EAA AirVenture Oshkosh 2026, the revival of the nearly forgotten Montana Bluebird stands out. This rare, petite two-seater aircraft has been meticulously restored by Montana-based aviation enthusiast, Tim Talen. The aircraft, believed to be the only surviving example of its kind, made its debut at the world’s premier aviation celebration in Oshkosh, Wisconsin.
The original Montana Bluebird LP-4, a product of the economically challenging 1930s, was manufactured in limited quantities by the National Airplane and Motor Company. This small regional enterprise found it difficult to compete with larger, better-funded manufacturers. The aircraft, which accommodated two occupants and was powered by a single reciprocating engine, never achieved widespread commercial success. Today, it is primarily remembered by vintage aircraft historians and restorers as a symbol of American aviation ingenuity during the interwar era.
Talen’s restored Montana Bluebird was showcased as part of AirVenture’s celebrated Vintage in Review exhibit, featuring iconic aircraft from the first half-century of powered flight. The event, held from July 20–26 at Wittman Regional Airport in Oshkosh, Wisconsin, attracted hundreds of thousands of aviation fans from around the globe, despite the early smoke from Canadian wildfires.
