Cleveland Coalition Rallies to Preserve Burke Lakefront Airport
The future of Burke Lakefront Airport (KBKL) in Cleveland, Ohio, hangs in the balance. Over 50 local business, education, and civic leaders have joined forces with general aviation advocates to fight for the airport’s survival. On August 4, 2026, this burgeoning coalition implored the Cleveland City Council to dismiss Mayor Justin Bibb’s proposal to shutter the downtown lakefront airport. They also demanded an open public hearing to discuss the airport’s fate.
According to the coalition, KBKL is “an essential community asset, critical to the city’s progress, prosperity, regional connectivity, and workforce opportunity.” This initiative has garnered support from prominent aviation organizations, including the National Business Aviation Association (NBAA). The NBAA welcomed the coalition’s stance in a statement issued on August 5.
Mayor Bibb’s plan to close the 450-acre lakefront facility by 2029 and redevelop the site faces numerous hurdles. The city has accepted FAA and state grants that legally bind it to keep the airport operational until the late 2030s. Consequently, closing the airport could necessitate an act of Congress and potentially cost Cleveland millions in grant repayments. The Cleveland National Air Show has also signaled that it will cease operations entirely if the airport is closed.
Aviation advocates argue that closing KBKL would sever crucial medical transport links, aviation education programs, and regional business connectivity. They assert that these losses could not be compensated by any park or sports complex.
