Alphabet’s AI Revamp: Hassabis and Dean Depart in Major Leadership Reshuffle
In a monumental leadership reshuffle in Silicon Valley this year, Alphabet unveiled extensive changes to its Google DeepMind division. This announcement led to a roughly 4–5% drop in Alphabet shares. Demis Hassabis, the Nobel Prize-winning co-founder of DeepMind, is transitioning from his role as CEO of Google DeepMind to become the division’s Chairman and Alphabet’s Chief Scientist. His new focus will be on long-term AGI strategy and AI drug discovery at Isomorphic Labs.
Koray Kavukcuoglu, previously DeepMind’s Chief Technology Officer and Alphabet’s Chief AI Architect, will take over the day-to-day operations. As the new Senior Vice President of Google DeepMind, he will report directly to CEO Sundar Pichai. Kavukcuoglu’s responsibilities will include overseeing Gemini model development, frontier AI research, and Google’s AI developer platforms.
In a simultaneous shocker, Jeff Dean — a legendary engineer and 27-year Google veteran credited with some of the company’s most significant technical breakthroughs — is leaving to co-found Discovery Loop. This public benefit corporation is dedicated to automating machine learning, science, and engineering research. He will be joined by Google Senior Fellow Sanjay Ghemawat, Oriol Vinyals, and Quoc Le. Alphabet will serve as a founding investor and cloud provider for this new venture.
These changes occur amidst increasing pressure on Google to compete with OpenAI and Anthropic. There have been reports of low morale within DeepMind and delays to the unreleased Gemini 4 model, which Hassabis hinted at in his farewell memo to staff.
