Visa Makes a Bold Move in Cybersecurity with $2.4 Billion Acquisition of AI Fraud-Fighting Firm, BioCatch

Payment processing behemoth, Visa (NYSE: V), has made a landmark agreement to acquire the Israeli behavioral biometrics firm, BioCatch. The deal, worth a staggering $2.4 billion in cash, is one of the most significant cybersecurity transactions of 2026. The announcement, made on August 3, underscores Visa’s proactive approach against the escalating tide of AI-powered financial fraud that is currently plaguing the global banking system.

Established in 2011 with its headquarters in Tel Aviv, BioCatch has pioneered an advanced fraud detection platform. This platform utilizes behavioral biometrics—analyzing indicators such as keystroke timing, touch screen pressure, swipe patterns, and the physical handling of a device—to differentiate genuine users from fraudsters and bots in real time. The platform is currently serving over 350 banking clients across 21 countries, including more than 100 of the world’s largest banks, and safeguards approximately 760 million users across 1.8 billion devices.

The acquisition of BioCatch is being made from London-based private equity firm Permira among other investors. Permira had previously acquired a majority stake in BioCatch in 2024 at a valuation of $1.3 billion—a figure that has nearly doubled in less than two years. The deal is projected to be finalized by the end of Visa’s fiscal second quarter of 2027.

Andrew Torre, Visa’s President of Value-Added Services, cautioned that account takeovers and scams are costing the global economy over $1 trillion annually. He further warned that AI is facilitating these attacks on an unprecedented scale. Over the past five years, Visa has invested more than $13 billion in technology and infrastructure to combat fraud. The acquisition of BioCatch is anticipated to help thwart fraud before it even reaches the payment stage.
