A new free web-based tool, PilotBound, is garnering attention from the general aviation community. It provides a refreshingly honest approach to pilot training cost planning. Unlike typical flight school quotes that are based on the FAA’s 40-hour minimum, PilotBound projects the actual cost of obtaining a private pilot certificate. This is achieved by utilizing real FAA examiner completion data, which consistently shows that most students require 60 to 70 hours or more to reach checkride readiness.
This innovative tool was developed to address one of the most persistent issues in general aviation: the high dropout rate. Shockingly, nearly 80% of student pilots drop out before earning their certificate. This is often due to the lack of clear communication about the true costs upfront. Research cited on the PilotBound platform reveals that the primary reasons for dropout are not a lack of ability, but rather a loss of momentum and the feeling of being misled about time and money. The developers of PilotBound argue that a known, honest cost estimate is far easier for students to commit to than a constantly moving financial target.
PilotBound, the brainchild of CFI and CFII Samip Shah, also provides a filterable directory of 56 verified aviation flight-training scholarships and additional planning resources, all free of charge.
