ICON Aircraft Introduces ICON Sense Safety System for the A5
ICON Aircraft recently revealed a revolutionary flight safety system, ICON Sense. This system, designed exclusively for the renowned A5 amphibious light sport aircraft, was developed in collaboration with avionics specialists, Avilution and Skytron Avionics. The primary aim of ICON Sense is to address the persistent danger of incorrect gear landings in amphibious flying, which is the leading cause of fatal accidents in this aircraft category.
ICON Sense integrates GPS data, radar altimeters, aircraft performance metrics, descent rate, and high-resolution global water mapping. This integration enables the system to predict the aircraft’s touchdown surface before landing and alert pilots if the landing gear is incorrectly configured.
Additionally, ICON Sense introduces a comprehensive suite of audible alerts that work in tandem with the A5’s existing crew alerting system. These alerts include:
- Landing Proximity Assist radar altimeter callouts
- System status verbal warnings for issues such as Landing Gear Failure, Low Fuel, and Flaps Failure
- Annunciator panel cautions
The ICON Sense technology will be installed in newly manufactured aircraft and will also be available as a retrofit for the existing A5 fleet. ICON Aircraft, now under the ownership of SG Investment America (a part of China’s Shang Gong Group) following a 2024 bankruptcy, has plans to restart A5 production in 2027. Pre-orders for ICON Sense are currently open, with deliveries expected in Q4 2026. The pricing details will be announced closer to the release date.
