ICON Aircraft Introduces ‘ICON Sense’ – A Revolutionary Safety System for A5 Amphibian

ICON Aircraft has recently made a significant advancement in amphibious flight safety. They unveiled ICON Sense, an innovative flight safety system specifically designed for the renowned A5 amphibious light sport aircraft. The announcement was made at the EAA AirVenture Oshkosh 2026 event on July 29, 2026. This exciting news comes with the additional announcement that ICON plans to resume A5 production in 2027 under the new ownership of SG Investment America.

The development of ICON Sense was a collaborative effort with avionics specialists, Avilution and Skytron Avionics. The system integrates GPS data, radar altimeters, aircraft performance data, engine power, descent rate, and high-resolution global water mapping. This combination of data allows the system to predict the aircraft’s touchdown point and, crucially, whether the landing gear is correctly configured for the landing surface.

ICON Sense addresses a significant hazard in amphibious aviation. As pointed out by Avilution founder Mark Spencer, “Wrong-gear landings are the number one cause of fatal accidents in amphibious aircraft.” In addition to this, ICON Sense provides a range of audible alerts, including radar altimeter voice callouts, surface proximity tones, and spoken warnings for faults such as landing gear failure, low fuel, and flap failures.

Pre-orders for ICON Sense are now open, with deliveries expected to commence in the fourth quarter of 2026. This technology will be a standard feature on all newly built A5s and will also be available as a retrofit for the existing fleet of over 200 aircraft.
