Egypt’s Digital Revolution: Launch of QR Code Visas at Cairo Airport

Egypt is on the verge of transforming its entry process for international travelers. The launch of a Digital Visa-on-Arrival System at Cairo International Airport is set to commence on August 1, 2026. This innovative initiative, announced by Egypt’s Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities on July 23–24, 2026, replaces traditional paper visa stickers with scannable QR codes across all arrival terminals at one of Africa’s busiest aviation hubs.

Eligible travelers from approximately 46 nationalities will have the convenience of generating their Visa QR Code at various stages: before departure, during their flight, or after landing. This can be done via an official online portal, a dedicated mobile app, or self-service kiosks in Cairo Airport’s arrival halls. The total cost is $36 USD, which includes the existing $30 visa fee and a new $6 digital processing charge. It’s crucial to note that each QR code carries a 48-hour validity window from the moment it is generated, so travelers are advised to create theirs close to their travel date.

During the pilot phase, the traditional paper visa-on-arrival will continue to be available alongside the new digital option. Once testing concludes, the paper sticker will be phased out entirely. The rollout to other Egyptian airports — including Hurghada, Sharm El Sheikh, and Luxor — will follow in stages. With Egypt receiving 6.1 million international tourists in the first four months of 2026, a 7% year-on-year increase, this modernization move is particularly timely.
