In a significant advancement for skincare science, a global research team spearheaded by Hiroshima University has devised a revolutionary method. This technique can detect initial-stage damage in human skin collagen, long before any visible signs manifest on the skin’s surface. The research, published in the esteemed journal ACS Nano on July 16, 2026, holds the potential to revolutionize how dermatologists evaluate and treat skin aging.

The study discloses that the molecular organization and supramolecular chirality, or the structural “handedness” of dermal collagen, starts to deteriorate well before the actual thinning or fragmentation of the visible fiber network. In layman’s terms, your skin’s internal structure might be decaying even when it appears perfectly healthy to the naked eye and conventional imaging tools.

“Our findings suggest that conventional imaging methods can show the ‘bricks’ of a collagen structure, but they may overlook subtle changes in how those bricks are arranged,” explained lead author Ali Haider, a graduate research fellow at Hiroshima University’s International Institute for Sustainability with Knotted Chiral Meta Matter (WPI-SKCM²).

The team revealed these ultra-early changes by merging advanced optical imaging with chiroptical spectroscopy in a novel multimodal workflow. This technique could lay the groundwork for earlier, more precise anti-aging skincare interventions and next-generation diagnostic tools for cosmetic dermatology.
