U.S. Airfares and Accommodation Costs on the Rise
According to NerdWallet’s July 2026 Travel Inflation Report, U.S. airfares jumped 26.5% compared to the same period last year. This is one of the steepest year-over-year increases in recent memory. Average domestic round-trip fares reached $623 in April 2026, their highest level in nearly four years. Hotel and motel room rates have also risen by 4.8% over the past year, adding further pressure to vacation budgets.

The primary driver behind the surge is rising jet fuel costs. The average traveler is now expected to spend $4,069 on their longest summer trip. This is 17% more than in 2025, according to Deloitte’s 2026 Summer Travel Survey. Only 45% of U.S. adults plan to take a summer vacation requiring paid lodging, marking a six-year low.
Travelers Prioritize Summer Vacations Despite Costs
Despite the sticker shock, 73% of travelers say a summer vacation is too important to skip. Many are cutting everyday expenses to fund their trips, according to Priceline data. Road trips are surging in popularity, with 71% of Americans planning to drive to their next vacation, according to Hilton’s 2026 Trends Report. This trend is partly inspired by the U.S.’s 250th anniversary celebrations peaking in July.
