AMD Introduces Helios AI Rack System, Secures Microsoft as a Principal Client
Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) has officially launched Helios, its inaugural rack-scale AI system. This move signifies the company’s most audacious challenge to Nvidia’s supremacy in the AI hardware market. Microsoft has now joined the ranks of Meta, OpenAI, Oracle, and Tata Consultancy Services as early adopters of the platform.
Microsoft has plans to roll out Helios across its Azure data centers in the latter half of 2026. The system will be used to drive frontier AI model inference, Azure AI services, and enterprise customer workloads. Helios is equipped with 72 of AMD’s forthcoming Instinct MI455X GPUs — each boasting 432 GB of HBM4 memory and 19.6 terabits per second of bandwidth — in addition to 6th-generation EPYC Venice CPUs, Pensando networking chips, and AMD’s ROCm software stack, all consolidated into a single rack unit.
Named in honor of the ancient Greek sun god, Helios is engineered to compete with Nvidia’s Grace Blackwell and Vera Rubin systems by providing a more adaptable, open-standard architecture. Lisa Su, AMD CEO, described the Microsoft partnership as a comprehensive collaboration developed over several years. AMD’s data center revenue saw a 57% increase year-over-year in Q1 2026, and the company anticipates tens of billions in AI data center revenue starting in 2027, with Helios as its focal point.
