Medicare Introduces Groundbreaking GLP-1 Weight-Loss Drug Coverage for Seniors at an Affordable Rate
In a groundbreaking move for American healthcare, Medicare unveiled its new GLP-1 Bridge Program on July 1, 2026. This program provides millions of eligible older Americans with access to widely-used weight-loss medications, including Wegovy (Novo Nordisk) and Zepbound (Eli Lilly), for a nominal copayment of just $50 per month.
The program, overseen by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS), is a time-limited demonstration that will run until December 31, 2027. This marks the first instance of Medicare covering GLP-1 drugs exclusively for obesity, a significant policy milestone considering the previous federal law that prohibited such coverage. CMS Administrator Dr. Mehmet Oz expressed that “these treatments are a major medical advancement, but too many seniors are currently unable to access them due to high cost.”
To be eligible, Medicare Part D enrollees must meet specific health criteria. These include:
- A BMI of 35 or more
- A BMI between 30 and 35, coupled with conditions such as uncontrolled high blood pressure, prediabetes, or a history of heart attack
Eligible participants must also be enrolled in a lifestyle program that emphasizes diet and exercise.
Analysts predict that as many as 15 to 20 million older adults in Medicare could potentially qualify for weight-loss drugs. The program could significantly increase the patient populations for both Novo Nordisk and Eli Lilly. The Congressional Budget Office projects that expanded coverage could cost the federal government $35 billion between 2026 and 2034.
