The global AI race has entered a dramatic new phase as Moonshot AI, a Beijing-based startup backed by Alibaba and Tencent, unleashed its latest model — Kimi K3 — on July 17, 2026. The massive 2.8-trillion-parameter model is live across Kimi’s platforms and API, with open weights promised by July 27. Its release immediately rattled markets and the competitive landscape, with Chinese AI rival Z.ai stock plummeting 28% and MiniMax Group falling 16% on the news.
Kimi K3 is being described as a potential “Linux moment” for artificial intelligence — a powerful, freely customizable model that threatens to commoditize the AI model layer and undercut premium-priced offerings from OpenAI and Anthropic. On OpenRouter — a major AI model marketplace processing over 20 trillion tokens per week — Chinese-origin models now occupy the top five spots by weekly token usage, with all five (from Tencent, Xiaomi, DeepSeek, MiniMax, and Z.ai) being open-weight.
Moonshot AI, founded in 2023 and valued at over $20 billion after a $2 billion fundraise in May, is at the forefront of this open-weight insurgency. Meanwhile, American companies are scrambling to respond: Thinking Machines, a startup led by former OpenAI CTO Mira Murati, debuted its own open-weight model called Inkling on July 15, and Nvidia is rapidly expanding its open-weight Nemotron model family.
