Peak Energy Initiates Construction of Pioneering Sodium-Ion Battery Plant in America

Sacramento, CA — July 9, 2026 — The clean energy startup, Peak Energy, made a groundbreaking announcement on July 8. They have chosen Sacramento, California as the location for America’s inaugural commercial manufacturing facility dedicated to grid-scale sodium-ion energy storage systems.

The 183,000-square-foot facility is engineered to manufacture up to 4 GWh of battery systems annually. This production capacity is sufficient to power nearly four million homes per year. The plant’s design is specifically aimed at leveraging the escalating AI-driven demand for large-scale energy storage, offering an alternative to traditional lithium-ion technology.

Established in 2023 by industry veterans from Tesla, Enovix, and Fluence, Peak Energy has already secured more than 6 GWh of customer commitments. Furthermore, the company has amassed over $1 billion in commercial agreements with partners such as Jupiter Power, RWE, and Energy Vault.

In June, Peak Energy revealed a high-profile strategic partnership with General Motors. This partnership, supported by an investment from GM Ventures, aims to co-develop next-generation sodium-ion cells specifically designed for grid applications. Commercial cells from this GM collaboration are expected to be available post-2028.

The announcement of the Sacramento factory represents a significant milestone for domestic energy manufacturing. It also positions the U.S. as a potential global competitor in the next-generation battery technology market, currently dominated by China.
