Meta’s Monumental $200B ‘Hyperion’ AI Campus Transforms Rural Louisiana
Meta Platforms is radically altering the rural landscape of Richland Parish, Louisiana. The company’s gargantuan ‘Hyperion’ AI data center campus is a venture that has skyrocketed from an initial $10 billion estimate to a staggering $200 billion in total projected costs. This makes it the most extensive AI infrastructure project ever embarked upon by a private company.
The Hyperion facility, sprawling across a massive 4,000 acres — approximately four times the size of Manhattan’s Central Park — is designed to accommodate the world’s largest multi-gigawatt AI training cluster. To fuel this behemoth, Entergy Louisiana is erecting 10 gas-fired power plants to supply over 7 gigawatts of energy. This follows a new agreement Meta struck in March 2026 for seven additional plants.
Meta has pledged $300 million towards local infrastructure, including roads and water systems, and has secured a contentious $3.3 billion local tax abatement package. The project’s primary financing comes through a $27 billion off-balance-sheet Wall Street debt arrangement, with BlackRock buying more than $3 billion in bonds.
The project is anticipated to generate more than 5,000 peak construction jobs and 500 permanent positions. However, critics caution that it could strain local water and electrical resources. Louisiana is also considering nuclear power for future capacity at the site. In the meantime, Amazon has revealed plans to invest $12 billion in nearby northwest Louisiana for its own data center campuses, further establishing the region’s emerging identity as a “Silicon Bayou.”
