Meta’s Hyperion AI Megacampus: A $200B Game-Changer for Rural Louisiana
What began as a $10 billion data center announcement in late 2024 has grown into one of the most audacious infrastructure bets in corporate history. Meta’s “Hyperion” campus in Richland Parish, Louisiana, is now projected to cost over $200 billion, according to Bloomberg reporting. This project is transforming a quiet farming community into the epicenter of the global AI infrastructure race.
The 4,000-acre facility — roughly four times the size of Central Park — is engineered to become the world’s largest multi-gigawatt AI training cluster. It demands more than 7 gigawatts of power. To meet this need, Entergy Louisiana is constructing 10 new gas-fired power plants, with Meta covering all construction costs.
The project is being financed in part through a sophisticated $27 billion off-balance-sheet debt structure. BlackRock has purchased over $3 billion in bonds from the joint venture. Louisiana sweetened the deal with a sales-tax exemption on AI chips and a $3.3 billion local tax abatement package.
The economic impact for Louisiana is significant. Over $875 million in contracts have already been awarded to local businesses. At peak activity, the project will provide 5,000 construction jobs. However, critics warn that once operational, the highly automated facility will employ only around 500 permanent technicians.
Meta’s full-year 2026 capital expenditure guidance has risen to between $125–$145 billion. This is nearly double what it spent in 2025, as the company races to dominate the generative AI era.
