SpaceX Clinches Tax Incentive for $119B Texas Chip Megafactory
SpaceX has successfully secured a significant tax abatement from Grimes County, Texas, paving the way for its ambitious Terafab semiconductor manufacturing facility. This move marks a crucial milestone for what could potentially be one of the largest chip investments in U.S. history. The initial investment for the project is estimated at $55 billion, which could escalate to $119 billion upon completion of all phases.
The proposed “next-generation, vertically integrated semiconductor manufacturing and advanced computing fabrication facility” is set to be located at the Gibbons Creek Reservoir site, approximately 90 miles northeast of Austin. The facility is a joint venture between SpaceX, Tesla, and xAI. Intel has also joined the effort to design, fabricate, and package ultra-high-performance chips at scale. These chips are intended to power Tesla’s electric vehicles and Optimus robots, Starlink satellites, and xAI’s planned orbital data centers.
Elon Musk has projected that the facility will eventually manufacture enough chips to provide 1 terawatt of power annually. He asserts that current semiconductor manufacturers aren’t producing chips rapidly enough to meet the demands of his companies’ AI and robotics needs. The approval from Grimes County comes at a pivotal time as SpaceX prepares for a potential record-breaking IPO next week. Investors are keenly observing whether the company can diversify beyond rockets into AI and semiconductor manufacturing. Despite concerns from local residents about straining community resources, the county has granted full property tax exemptions for the project.
