Groundbreaking Diabetes Pill: A Potential Game-Changer in Fat Burning and Muscle Preservation
Scientists at Karolinska Institutet in Sweden have made a significant breakthrough in the treatment of diabetes and obesity. They have developed an experimental pill that operates differently from popular GLP-1 drugs like Ozempic. Published in the journal Cell on June 3, 2026, this innovative treatment activates metabolism in skeletal muscle rather than suppressing appetite, offering a potential game-changer for type 2 diabetes and obesity treatment.
Unlike injectable medications such as semaglutide that reduce hunger through gut-brain signals, this new oral pill boosts fat burning through muscle metabolism while preserving crucial muscle mass. Early clinical trials involving 48 healthy adults and 25 people with type 2 diabetes showed the treatment was safe and well-tolerated, with fewer side effects than traditional GLP-1 drugs.
“Our results point to a future where we can improve metabolic health without losing muscle mass,” said Professor Tore Bengtsson from Stockholm University’s Wenner-Gren Institute. “Muscles are important in both type 2 diabetes and obesity, and muscle mass is also directly correlated with life expectancy.” The drug, developed by Swedish biotech company Atrogi AB, is now advancing to Phase II clinical trials to determine its effectiveness across larger, more diverse populations.
