Dell Triumphs with a Whopping $9.7 Billion Pentagon Software Contract
Dell Technologies scored a significant win on Wednesday, May 27, 2026. The U.S. Department of Defense awarded the tech giant a five-year, $9.7 billion contract. This contract entrusts Dell with the management of Microsoft software licensing across the entire military apparatus.
The contract, officially known as the Microsoft Department of War Enterprise Software Agreement II Core Enterprise Technology Agreement, tasks Dell Federal Systems with providing Microsoft 365, advanced cloud subscriptions, and on-premises licensing. These services will be extended to the Department of Defense, Intelligence Community, and U.S. Coast Guard. Pentagon Chief Information Officer Kirsten Davies expressed that the agreement would save the department $422 million annually. This saving is achieved by consolidating and streamlining software licenses across classified and unclassified systems.
However, this deal has sparked controversy. It follows President Trump’s public endorsement of Dell earlier in May. At a White House event, he urged attendees to “go out and buy a Dell.” Michael Dell, the company’s founder and CEO, had previously pledged $6.25 billion to fund Trump-backed investment accounts. Following the announcement, Dell’s stock rose 4.61% in after-hours trading, with shares up approximately 142% year-to-date.
