Guava Juice: A Simple and Affordable Solution to Combat Anemia

Women battling anemia may have discovered an unexpected ally: guava juice. A recent study published in BMJ Nutrition Prevention & Health reveals that this tropical beverage significantly enhances the body’s iron absorption capabilities, offering a simple and cost-effective solution for a condition affecting millions worldwide.

The comprehensive review of 17 studies found that women and teenage girls who consumed guava juice—especially when taken with iron supplements—experienced noticeable increases in hemoglobin levels. The pooled data showed an average rise of 1.71 g/dl when guava juice was combined with iron supplementation, enough to potentially shift individuals from mild or moderate anemia to non-anemic status.

The secret lies in guava’s exceptionally high vitamin C content—up to four times more than oranges per 100 grams. Vitamin C enhances iron absorption from plant sources by converting ferric iron to ferrous iron in the digestive tract. The fruit also provides vitamin A, folate, and dietary fiber.

Researchers suggest including guava juice in dietary counseling for anemia prevention, particularly in regions where the condition is prevalent. “Given its nutritional richness, affordability, and cultural acceptance across Asia, guava juice offers a promising low-cost intervention,” the researchers noted.
