Abu Dhabi Announces the $1.7B ‘Sphere’ Entertainment Hub, Set to Open in 2029

The Abu Dhabi Culture and Tourism Authority has unveiled plans for a revolutionary spherical immersive experience center named ‘Sphere.’ This announcement, made on May 14, 2026, marks a significant milestone in the UAE’s tourism diversification strategy.

The ambitious ‘Sphere’ project, with an estimated investment of approximately $1.7 billion, is set to be situated in the heart of Abu Dhabi’s prime entertainment district—Yas Island. The venue, scheduled for completion in 2029, is designed to accommodate up to 20,000 spectators, positioning itself as a leading-edge technology tourism destination in the region.

As per Mohamed Khalifa Al Mubarak, chairman of the Department of Culture and Tourism, Abu Dhabi, the ‘Sphere’ project is a pivotal element of the emirate’s ‘Tourism Strategy 2030.’ This strategy is aimed at reducing reliance on the oil economy and diversifying industries through the introduction of high-tech entertainment landmarks. The target is to attract 39.3 million visitors and elevate the tourism sector’s GDP contribution to AED 90 billion ($24.5 billion) by 2030.

Despite the prevailing geopolitical uncertainties in the region, Al Mubarak highlighted the robust tourism figures from March, underlining the destination’s resilience and attractiveness to international visitors.
