Rivian Introduces AI-Driven Voice Assistant in EV Range

Electric vehicle manufacturer, Rivian, has recently announced the introduction of its AI-driven Rivian Assistant. This advanced feature is now available through a software update for all compatible R1T and R1S owners who are subscribed to the Connect+ cellular data plan. The plan is priced at $15 per month or $150 annually. Furthermore, this feature will also be incorporated in the upcoming R2 mid-size electric SUV, set to launch later this spring.

The Rivian Assistant is a significant leap forward from traditional voice command systems. It offers a deep integration with the vehicle’s hardware and software. Users can activate it by simply saying “Hey, Rivian” or by pressing a button on the steering wheel. This allows control over vehicle settings, climate control, navigation, media, messaging, and calling. The assistant is designed to understand natural language and can handle complex multi-step commands. For instance, it can warm passengers’ seats while keeping the driver’s seat cool, or send restaurant recommendations with estimated arrival times to friends.

Built on what Rivian refers to as “Rivian Unified Intelligence”, the assistant utilizes different AI models to select the most suitable one for each task. It integrates with third-party apps, starting with Google Calendar, and can provide troubleshooting assistance, answer general knowledge questions, and learn user preferences over time. Rivian’s CEO, RJ Scaringe, recently hinted that Rivian might even manufacture the lidar sensors that power its autonomous driving technology.
