Google and SpaceX: Pioneering Orbital Data Centers for Advanced AI Computing

Google and SpaceX are reportedly on the brink of launching data centers into orbit, heralding a new era in the infrastructure of artificial intelligence. These discussions are taking place as SpaceX gears up for its eagerly awaited $1.75 trillion initial public offering later this year.

Reports from The Wall Street Journal suggest that the potential partnership would involve Google leveraging SpaceX’s rocket launch services to deploy orbital computing facilities specifically designed to handle AI workloads. This initiative is in line with Google’s Project Suncatcher, announced in the latter part of last year, which has set a goal to launch prototype satellites equipped with the company’s custom Tensor Processing Units by 2027.

SpaceX CEO Elon Musk has been advocating for orbital data centers as a cost-effective solution that sidesteps the local opposition and regulatory hurdles that frequently impede the construction of ground-based data centers. In a recent move, the company applied for authorization to launch up to one million satellites to bolster its orbital ambitions and also inked a deal with AI firm Anthropic to supply massive computing power from its Memphis facility.

Google, which already holds approximately 6.1% of SpaceX from a $900 million investment in 2015, is also reportedly engaged in discussions with other rocket-launch companies. The tech giant’s ultimate goal is to launch 81 satellites spanning a 1-kilometer radius to establish an in-orbit compute cluster.

However, experts warn that significant challenges still lie ahead. When the costs of satellite construction and launch are taken into account, terrestrial data centers currently remain a more economical option. Technical obstacles such as radiation hardening, thermal management in a vacuum, and data transmission latency could restrict the types of AI applications that are suitable for space-based processing.
