Anthropic and SpaceX Join Forces for a Significant Boost in AI Computing Power

Anthropic unveiled a landmark agreement with Elon Musk’s SpaceX on Wednesday, securing access to the full computing capacity of the Colossus 1 data center in Memphis, Tennessee. This unexpected partnership marks a significant milestone in the AI industry.

The deal provides Anthropic with a surge of over 300 megawatts of new computing capacity, courtesy of more than 220,000 Nvidia GPUs, within a month. This substantial infrastructure enhancement will aid the AI company in addressing the severe capacity constraints that have resulted in aggressive rate caps and usage limitations for its widely-used Claude AI assistant.

Despite Musk’s previous criticism of Anthropic, the partnership is especially noteworthy. Musk altered his stance after meeting with senior Anthropic team members last week, expressing that he was “impressed” by their competence and dedication. As part of the agreement, Anthropic also indicated interest in teaming up with SpaceX to develop multiple gigawatts of orbital AI compute capacity in space.

In the wake of the deal, the company promptly removed five-hour rate caps for most paid subscribers and doubled usage limits for its Claude Code product, further enhancing its service offerings.
