Palo Alto Networks Set to Acquire AI Security Pioneer, Portkey

Palo Alto Networks declared on April 30, 2026, its plan to acquire Portkey, a leading innovator in AI gateway technology. This strategic move aims to bolster the security of enterprise deployment of autonomous AI agents. Although the financial details remain undisclosed, industry insiders estimate the deal to be worth approximately $140 million.

Portkey has carved a niche in AI gateway infrastructure, managing and safeguarding autonomous AI agents. It currently processes trillions of tokens per month, maintaining the low latency vital for agent-to-agent communication. Post-acquisition, Portkey will be integrated into Palo Alto Networks’ Prisma AIRS platform. This will serve as a centralized control plane to monitor, route, and secure all AI transactions across enterprises.

The acquisition is a strategic response to the rapidly expanding AI security gap. As organizations transition from AI copilots to fully autonomous agents, these AI agents act as highly privileged insiders. They execute automated decisions across internal and external systems, thereby creating new attack surfaces that traditional security tools struggle to protect.

Lee Klarich, Chief Product & Technology Officer at Palo Alto Networks, expressed that as autonomous agents join the enterprise workforce, they become a new, unmanaged attack surface. It’s worth noting that Portkey had recently raised $15 million in Series A funding led by Elevation Capital, just months before this acquisition announcement. The transaction is anticipated to close in Palo Alto Networks’ fourth quarter of fiscal 2026.
