U.S. Coast Guard Executes Dramatic Rescue of Luxury Cruise Ship from Antarctic Ice

In a thrilling rescue operation, the U.S. Coast Guard Cutter Polar Star liberated the luxury cruise ship Scenic Eclipse II after it was ensnared in dense pack ice near Antarctica on January 17, 2026.

The 200-passenger expedition cruise ship found itself trapped in ice near McMurdo Sound, prompting a call for assistance. The Polar Star, America’s only heavy icebreaker with an impressive 75,000 horsepower, carved a path through the formidable ice sheets. It circled the stranded vessel twice before escorting it for four nautical miles to the safety of open water.

The rescue mission held a special significance as it coincided with the Polar Star’s 50th anniversary of commissioned service. The cutter was already in Antarctic waters conducting Operation Deep Freeze 2026, a critical military operation supporting the National Science Foundation’s U.S. Antarctic Program for research activities.

The Australian-owned Scenic Eclipse II is a luxury expedition vessel that provides helicopter tours and high-end amenities to passengers exploring the remote polar regions. All passengers and crew aboard were reported safe, and the ship was able to resume its voyage after being liberated from the ice.
