OpenAI Introduces Ad Testing in ChatGPT for US Users

OpenAI recently announced a significant shift in its revenue strategy. Starting from mid-January, the company will begin testing advertisements within ChatGPT. This move aims to sustain the company’s costly AI operations.

These ads will be displayed at the bottom of ChatGPT’s responses for free and ChatGPT Go tier users in the United States. They will be clearly labeled as “sponsored.” OpenAI has emphasized that these ads will not influence ChatGPT’s responses, and user conversations will remain confidential from advertisers.

“It is clear to us that a lot of people want to use a lot of AI and don’t want to pay, so we are hopeful a business model like this can work,” CEO Sam Altman wrote on X (formerly Twitter).

Previously, OpenAI expressed concerns about advertising. Altman described ads combined with AI as “uniquely unsettling.” However, the company anticipates spending $115 billion over the next five years.

The ads will not appear for users under 18 or near sensitive topics. These include:

  • Politics
  • Health
  • Mental health

Additionally, Pro, Business, Enterprise, and Edu accounts will remain ad-free. OpenAI also launched ChatGPT Go, a new $8/month tier with expanded features, now available worldwide.
