Historic First Flight: Joby Aviation’s Hybrid VTOL Takes to the Skies

Joby Aviation has marked a significant milestone with the successful completion of its revolutionary turbine-electric, autonomous VTOL aircraft’s maiden flight. The groundbreaking event took place at its Marina, California facility on November 7, 2025. This hybrid demonstrator represents a substantial leap forward in electric aviation technology, merging Joby’s proven eVTOL platform with extended range and autonomous capabilities.

The aircraft is an evolution of Joby’s all-electric S4 air taxi, which has already accumulated over 50,000 miles of flight testing and is currently in the final stage of FAA type certification. The hybrid variant is enhanced with Joby’s SuperPilot autonomous technology stack and features a turbine-electric propulsion system. This system is designed to deliver longer range and extended operational capabilities, making it suitable for both civilian and military applications.

Developed in partnership with L3Harris Technologies, the demonstrator is poised to meet the growing demand for autonomous aircraft platforms. The U.S. government has shown its support by allocating approximately $9 billion in its fiscal year 2026 budget for the development of next-generation autonomous and hybrid aircraft.

Joby plans to conduct operational demonstrations with government customers in 2026, marking a crucial step toward the commercialization of hybrid VTOL technology.
