Joby Aviation Advances to Final Stage of FAA Certification for Air Taxis
Joby Aviation has officially embarked on power-on testing of its inaugural FAA-conforming aircraft, a pivotal step in the company’s quest to secure type certification from the Federal Aviation Administration. This milestone was announced by the California-based electric air taxi developer, paving the way for thousands of hardware and software integration tests in anticipation of flight testing with FAA pilots.
“The initiation of this aircraft subsystem testing marks the culmination of over a decade of concentrated engineering and certification enhancements,” stated Didier Papadopoulos, President of Aircraft OEM at Joby Aviation.
The company has already achieved over 600 flights in 2025, including its premier point-to-point flight from Marina to Monterey in California. Joby’s future plans include the launch of commercial air taxi services in Dubai next year, with subsequent services in Ras Al Khaimah slated for 2027.
- Type Inspection Authorization (TIA): This process signifies the final stage before the aircraft can receive its official FAA type certificate, which will enable commercial operations.
- Flight Testing: Testing by Joby pilots is set to commence later this year, with the FAA scheduled to conduct its own tests in 2026.
