Reflection AI, an AI Startup Backed by Nvidia, Raises a Record $2B at $8B Valuation

Nvidia-backed AI startup Reflection AI has secured a massive $2 billion funding round, catapulting the year-old company to an $8 billion valuation in one of the largest open-source AI funding rounds ever recorded.

Founded in March 2024 by former Google DeepMind researchers Misha Laskin and Ioannis Antonoglou, Reflection AI is positioning itself as America’s answer to Chinese AI leaders like DeepSeek. At the same time, it’s challenging closed frontier labs such as OpenAI and Anthropic with open-source alternatives.

The funding round drew heavyweight investors including former Google CEO Eric Schmidt, Citi, Donald Trump Jr.-backed 1789 Capital, and existing investors Lightspeed and Sequoia. This represents a staggering 15x leap from the company’s $545 million valuation just seven months ago.

Reflection AI plans to use the capital to secure compute resources needed to train frontier language models on “tens of trillions of tokens,” with the first model expected to launch early next year. The startup’s team of 60 AI researchers and engineers focuses on autonomous coding agents and general agentic reasoning capabilities.
