Amtrak’s NextGen Acela Trains: A New Era of High-Speed Travel Beginning August 28
After years of anticipation, Amtrak has finally announced the launch of its NextGen Acela high-speed trains. The inaugural service is scheduled for August 28, 2025, and will operate along the Northeast Corridor, connecting Washington D.C., New York City, and Boston.
The new trains boast of a myriad of significant upgrades. These include:
- A maximum speed of 160 mph, which is 10 mph faster than the current models.
- An increase of 27% in seating capacity per departure.
- Premium amenities such as complimentary high-speed 5G-enabled Wi-Fi, individual power outlets, and winged headrests for enhanced privacy and comfort.
Built by the French manufacturer Alstom at a facility in Hornell, New York, this $2.5 billion project has generated approximately 15,000 U.S. jobs across 29 states.
“In just a few weeks, history will be made with the debut of NextGen Acela as we launch a new standard for American train travel,” said Amtrak President Roger Harris. Initially, five trains will enter service, with all 28 NextGen Acela trainsets expected to be fully operational by 2027. The trains also feature a revolutionary tilt system for smoother rides and an enhanced onboard dining experience through the new Cafe Acela.
