Boeing Lands a $2.8B Satellite Contract from U.S. Space Force
Boeing has secured a $2.8 billion contract from the U.S. Space Force to develop and manufacture satellites for the Evolved Strategic Satellite Communications (ESS) program. This program is a vital part of America’s nuclear command, control, and communications (NC3) architecture. The contract, which was announced on July 3, 2025, encompasses the development and production of two satellites, with the option for two additional units.
The ESS program is designed to provide space-based nuclear command, control, and communications capabilities for the President of the United States and joint strategic forces worldwide. Once deployed in geostationary orbit, approximately 22,000 miles above Earth, these satellites will offer persistent global coverage to strategic warfighters.
Boeing’s ESS satellites will be equipped with highly protected waveforms, classified technologies developed in collaboration with the Department of Defense, and improved resilience and cyber capabilities compared to current strategic communications satellites. Since 2020, Boeing has been working on technology development and risk mitigation for ESS under a rapid prototyping contract.
The delivery of the first satellite is anticipated by 2031, with the entire project expected to be completed by 2033. Boeing outperformed its competitor, Northrop Grumman, to secure this critical national security contract. This contract signifies one of the Space Force’s largest programs, with $5.11 billion allocated for research and development through 2029.
