Apple Unveils AirTag 2: Enhanced Range and Amplified Speaker

Apple has officially launched the second-generation AirTag, marking the first major product announcement of 2026 with significant enhancements in tracking range and audio capabilities.

The new AirTag is equipped with Apple’s second-generation Ultra Wideband chip—the same U2 chip found in iPhone 17 and Apple Watch Series 11. This allows for Precision Finding from up to 50% farther away than the original model. Additionally, an upgraded Bluetooth chip broadens the range at which items can be located through the Find My network. For the first time, users can now utilize Precision Finding directly on Apple Watch Series 9 or later to locate their AirTag without the need to use their iPhone.

Apple has reengineered the internal speaker to be 50% louder than the previous generation, enabling users to hear their AirTag from up to twice the distance. The device also introduces a unique new alert chime, designed to make misplaced items easier to locate. The second-generation tracker retains the same circular design and $29 price point as the original, ensuring compatibility with existing AirTag accessories.

The new AirTag is available for order now on Apple’s website and is set to arrive in stores later this week. It requires iOS 26.2.1 or later to function and continues to use the same CR2032 coin cell battery, promising over a year of expected battery life. Apple has also broadened the Share Item Location feature, partnering with 36 airlines to assist travelers in tracking delayed or lost luggage, with plans to include 15 additional carriers in the program.
