Airbnb Forecasts Nature-Based Trips and Event Tourism to Lead 2026 Travel Trends

Airbnb unveiled its 2026 travel predictions on January 15, 2026, projecting a significant shift towards authentic, immersive experiences. The data suggests that travelers are increasingly seeking nature-based trips and event-driven tourism.

Searches for stays near US national parks have surged 35 percent, indicating that nature and outdoor experiences are becoming the top booked category on the platform.

Gen Z Redefines Travel Patterns

Gen Z travelers are reshaping travel trends, with short, 1-2 day international getaways growing at a faster rate than extended vacations. This trend is fueled by viral TikTok day-trip trends, as young travelers seek high-energy, culture-packed experiences.

The Great Smoky Mountains National Park has emerged as one of the top trending destinations globally, with searches among solo travelers soaring by over 135 percent.

Event Tourism on the Rise

Event tourism is experiencing a surge, with 65 percent of top-searched 2026 travel dates and cities aligning with major global events. These include the Winter Olympics in Milan and Cortina d’Ampezzo, the FIFA World Cup across North America, Coachella, and Carnival.

Cities such as Milan, Houston, Toronto, and Rio de Janeiro are already witnessing significant booking spikes.

Solo Travel Experiences Renaissance

Solo travel is undergoing a renaissance, with destinations like Idyllwild, California, La Altagracia in the Dominican Republic, and Tromsø, Norway seeing triple-digit growth.

“There is a desire for people to get out, get away from their phones, unplug, immerse in culture and really connect with people on a local, personal level,” said Natalie Shalk, Senior Editorial Lead at Airbnb.
