OpenAI Unveils ChatGPT App Directory for Third-Party Developers
On December 18, 2025, OpenAI made a significant announcement – it is now welcoming app submissions from third-party developers for its newly launched ChatGPT App Directory. This marks a significant expansion of the AI chatbot’s ecosystem.
The company has introduced its Apps SDK, currently in beta, which empowers developers to build chat-native experiences that integrate seamlessly into ChatGPT conversations. As per OpenAI, these apps can enhance ChatGPT’s functionality by introducing new context and enabling users to perform actions such as:
- Ordering groceries
- Creating slide decks
- Searching for apartments
And all this can be done without ever leaving the chat interface.
The App Directory, which can be accessed at chatgpt.com/apps, is neatly organized into Featured, Lifestyle, and Productivity categories. Major platforms such as Expedia, Spotify, Booking.com, Zillow, Canva, and Dropbox are already integrated. Developers can now submit their apps through OpenAI’s Developer platform for review and potential publication.
While direct monetization within ChatGPT is not yet available, developers can currently link out to native apps or websites for purchases. OpenAI has indicated that it is exploring internal monetization options for future rollout. This move positions ChatGPT as more than just a chatbot, transforming it into a comprehensive platform ecosystem akin to traditional app stores.
