OpenAI CEO Announces ‘Code Red’ as Google’s Gemini Challenges AI Dominance
OpenAI’s CEO, Sam Altman, has issued a critical internal memo to his team, declaring a “code red” in response to the escalating competition from Google’s Gemini AI and other contenders.
Altman emphasized in the memo that the company is currently in a decisive phase for ChatGPT. He stressed the need to allocate more resources to enhance the chatbot’s speed, reliability, and personalization features. This strategic shift was triggered by Google’s Gemini 3 AI model, launched in November, which surpassed ChatGPT in several industry-standard benchmark tests.
As a part of the “code red” initiative, OpenAI will postpone other projects. These include its advertising plans, AI shopping agents, and a personal assistant named Pulse. The company’s immediate focus is to launch a new reasoning model next week. Internal evaluations indicate that this model outperforms Google’s latest Gemini model.
OpenAI, with a valuation of $500 billion, is under immense pressure to retain its supremacy in the AI race. Despite ChatGPT’s impressive user base of over 800 million weekly users, rivals like Google’s Gemini have made substantial progress. Gemini’s monthly users surged from 450 million to 650 million between July and October.
