Google DeepMind and Google Research Launch WeatherNext 2: A Revolution in AI Weather Forecasting
Google DeepMind and Google Research have unveiled WeatherNext 2, a groundbreaking weather forecasting model. This advanced AI model is capable of generating predictions 8 times faster than previous models, with a resolution of up to 1-hour intervals. The model paves the way for a revolution in weather forecasting by providing hundreds of possible weather scenarios. This will significantly aid meteorologists and emergency planners in preparing for extreme weather events.
The innovative forecasting technology has been seamlessly integrated across Google’s ecosystem. This includes an upgrade in weather predictions in Google Search, Gemini, Pixel Weather, and Google Maps Platform’s Weather API. Furthermore, WeatherNext 2’s forecast data is now accessible through Earth Engine and BigQuery. An early access program is also being launched on Google Cloud’s Vertex AI platform for custom model inference.
Google has been actively collaborating with weather agencies, providing experimental cyclone predictions using this cutting-edge technology. The company stated in their announcement, “By providing powerful tools and open data, we hope to accelerate scientific discovery and empower a global ecosystem of researchers, developers and businesses.”
