Sonex Highwing Kit Aircraft Celebrates First Flight Success

Sonex Aircraft proudly announced the triumphant first flight of its innovative Highwing kit aircraft on June 30, 2025. This event marks a significant milestone for the Wisconsin-based manufacturer. The flight, piloted by esteemed Sonex Advisory Board member Joe Norris, was completed successfully despite a minor hiccup with the passenger door latch.

The prototype aircraft performed admirably, with all engine temperatures maintaining normal levels and requiring only minor rigging adjustments. The aircraft currently weighs in at 816 pounds when empty and is designed for a maximum gross weight of 1,500 pounds. This includes a useful load of 680 pounds, accommodating up to 30 gallons of fuel.

The two-seat Highwing boasts impressive specifications, with a cruise speed of 159 mph and a stall speed of 50 mph. This is all powered by a robust 130-horsepower UL Power UL350iS engine. Additional test flights are in the pipeline, with wheelpants and gear leg fairings to be installed. The company is now accepting $500 kit reservation deposits, with kits expected to be available later in 2025.
