Meta Announces Job Cuts in AI Division Amidst Strategic Overhaul

Meta has announced the layoffs of approximately 600 employees from its artificial intelligence division on October 22, 2025. This move is part of a broader effort to streamline operations and reduce organizational layers.

The cuts were announced by Chief AI Officer Alexandr Wang, who joined Meta in June following the company’s massive $14.3 billion investment in Scale AI. The layoffs affect staff across various sectors within Meta’s AI infrastructure.

  • Other AI-related product roles

However, employees at TBD Labs, which houses many of Meta’s high-profile AI recruits working on large language models, were spared from the cuts.

CEO Mark Zuckerberg reportedly became frustrated with Meta’s AI progress following lukewarm responses to the company’s Llama 4 models. The restructuring aims to create “smaller, talent-dense teams” that can move faster while Meta continues investing heavily in AI.

This includes a recent $27 billion deal with Blue Owl Capital for its Hyperion data center in Louisiana. Affected employees have termination dates set for November 21, 2025.
