OpenAI’s Sora App Reaches 1 Million Downloads: A New Era of AI Video Generation

OpenAI’s groundbreaking video generation app Sora has reached a significant milestone, achieving 1 million downloads in less than five days following its launch on September 30, 2025. The app, powered by the company’s cutting-edge Sora 2 model, has rapidly ascended to become the #1 app on Apple’s U.S. App Store, outpacing Google Gemini and even OpenAI’s own ChatGPT.

Sora offers users the ability to create short-form AI-generated videos up to 20 seconds long by simply typing text prompts. The app boasts a TikTok-style feed where users can share their creations and remix others’ videos.

What sets Sora apart is its unique “cameo” feature, which allows users to insert realistic versions of themselves or friends into any generated scene after a brief video recording. Despite being invite-only and currently limited to iOS devices in the U.S. and Canada, the app’s success has been swift and impressive.

Bill Peebles, head of Sora at OpenAI, highlighted that the app achieved 1 million downloads faster than even ChatGPT did at its launch. However, the platform has ignited a debate over copyright concerns, with videos featuring characters from popular franchises like SpongeBob SquarePants and Mario surfacing on the platform.
