Revolutionary Biometric Entry/Exit System Launched by EU
The European Union has officially launched its Entry/Exit System (EES) on October 12, 2025. This marks a revolutionary change in border control for travelers. The new biometric system replaces traditional passport stamping with digital fingerprint and facial recognition technology. This change is implemented across 29 European countries in the Schengen area.
Non-EU travelers, including Americans and Britons, will now have their fingerprints scanned and photos taken upon first entry to any Schengen country. The system aims to enhance border security and prevent overstaying of the 90-day visa-free limit. Implementation will be gradual over six months, with full rollout expected by April 10, 2026.
“This represents a decisive shift toward digitalized border management,” stated EU officials. The system will track entries and exits automatically, making it easier to identify overstayers while speeding up subsequent border crossings for registered travelers.
