OpenAI Unveils Expansion: 5 New Stargate AI Data Centers Worth $500B
OpenAI, Oracle, and SoftBank have announced the expansion of their colossal Stargate AI infrastructure project with five new data center locations across the United States, accelerating their ambitious $500 billion investment timeline.
The new facilities will be erected in Shackelford County and Milam County in Texas, Doña Ana County in New Mexico, Lordstown, Ohio, and an undisclosed Midwest location. Combined with the flagship site already operational in Abilene, Texas, these centers will bring Stargate to nearly 7 gigawatts of planned capacity and over $400 billion in investment over the next three years.
“AI can only fulfill its promise if we build the compute to power it,” said Masayoshi Son, Chairman and CEO of SoftBank Group.
The project is now ahead of schedule to secure the full $500 billion, 10-gigawatt commitment by the end of 2025. OpenAI and Oracle reviewed over 300 proposals from more than 30 states before selecting these locations.
The expansion will create approximately 25,000 onsite jobs plus tens of thousands of indirect positions nationwide. The Abilene facility is already operational with Oracle Cloud Infrastructure and NVIDIA GB200 chips, powering OpenAI’s next-generation AI research and ChatGPT services. This massive infrastructure buildout aims to secure American leadership in artificial intelligence amid global competition.
