Microsoft Unveils Groundbreaking Quantum Research Center in Maryland

Microsoft has recently announced the inauguration of a state-of-the-art quantum research center. This cutting-edge facility, located at the University of Maryland’s Discovery District, was officially opened on September 17, 2025. The establishment of the center is a part of Maryland Governor Wes Moore’s ambitious “Capital of Quantum” initiative.

This facility is a result of a significant collaboration among Microsoft, the State of Maryland, and the University of Maryland Enterprise Corporation. It is set to house one of the first prototypes of Microsoft’s topological quantum computer. This will provide unparalleled access to advanced quantum technology for the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) and other government agencies.

The center is designed to foster collaborative hardware and software development across various sectors, including industry, academia, and government.

This announcement comes on the heels of Microsoft’s recent quantum computing advancements. These include the successful creation of 24 logical qubits with Atom Computing partners and the development of their Majorana 1 quantum chip.
