Microsoft successfully created and entangled 24 logical qubits in collaboration with Atom Computing in November 2024, marking a significant milestone in the advent of reliable quantum computing. This achievement, combined with IBM’s announcement of their roadmap to build the world’s first large-scale, fault-tolerant quantum computer by 2029, signals that practical quantum computing is closer than ever.
IBM’s Quantum Starling system is projected to perform 20,000 times more operations than today’s quantum computers and would require the memory of more than a quindecillion (10^48) of the world’s most powerful supercomputers to represent its computational state. The quantum revolution promises to accelerate drug discovery, revolutionize materials science, and solve complex optimization problems that are currently impossible for classical computers.
